A brutal setback for a former Senegalese football hopeful

Senegalese striker Ibrahima Niane , currently under contract with French club Angers SCO , has been suspended for two years by the French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) . The reason: a positive test for ecstasy and MDMA , dating back more than two years. The decision, made public on May 22, 2025 , bans the player from all football-related activities until March 31, 2027 , whether competitions, training or sporting events.

End of contract, end of career?

This suspension comes at a critical time : Ibrahima Niane’s contract with Angers expires on June 30th. The club, which has just been relegated to Ligue 1, has not yet commented on the situation. For his part, the player was unable to provide any supporting evidence to the AFLD.

At 26 , this setback could spell the end of a career that, despite promising beginnings, has never really taken off. The Mbour native , currently back in Senegal for the holidays , sees his professional future seriously compromised.

A broken trajectory

Having passed through the famous Génération Foot Academy , Ibrahima Niane made a name for himself in 2017 by finishing top scorer in the Senegalese Ligue 1 with 19 goals in 18 matches, bringing the league title to his club. This performance opened the doors to FC Metz , where he arrived at the age of 18, presented as a great hope.

He contributed to the club’s return to Ligue 1 in 2019, but the real turning point in his career came in the fall of 2020. Having scored six goals in six league games, he was considered one of the best strikers at the start of the season and was very close to a call-up to the national team by Aliou Cissé . But a serious knee injury (ruptured cruciate ligament) put a sudden halt to this rise.

Since then, Niane has never managed to regain his form. His statistics are in decline, no longer exceeding three goals per season. This doping suspension now tarnishes an already fragile image, and casts a shadow over the rest of his professional career .

A reputation to rebuild

Beyond the sporting impact, this affair is a severe blow to the player’s credibility . For a professional footballer, testing positive for prohibited recreational drugs like ecstasy can hardly be dismissed as a careless mistake. The player’s silence in the face of the AFLD, and the lack of any defense, are perplexing.

For Senegalese football fans, this is the downfall of a talent who had everything to succeed , but who never fulfilled the hopes placed in him. Ibrahima Niane’s suspension also raises the question of the supervision and psychological support of young expatriate footballers , who are often left to their own devices in the face of pressure and injuries.

Conclusion: From meteoric rise to descent into hell

The case of Ibrahima Niane illustrates the fragile path of some African football hopefuls , where injuries, pressures, and bad decisions can turn a promising trajectory into disillusionment. Suspended for doping, without a club, and now sidelined until 2027, Niane will have to overcome more than just a sporting challenge if he ever wants to return to the professional field. For now, the time of silence and uncertainty begins .

Strategic expansion in Southern Africa

Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi Limited (CCBM), a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa – the American giant Coca-Cola Company ‘s main bottler in Africa – announced on April 17 the launch of a new production line at its Lilongwe plant. This initiative is part of the regional expansion strategy of the group, which is already present in 14 sub-Saharan African countries.

A major investment to support local and regional growth

Worth a total of $14.9 million, this new investment will enable CCBM to increase its production capacity by 19,200 bottles per hour, with formats ranging from 300 ml to 2 liters. The aim is twofold: to meet growing demand on the Malawian market, and to boost export capacity to neighboring markets, notably Zambia, where the group also operates a production unit.

“This investment in Malawi reaffirms our local commitment: to produce, distribute and source locally as much as possible. It reflects our confidence in the country’s future,” emphasizes the official press release.

Promising market prospects

Statista forecasts predict strong growth for the soft drinks sector in the region. In Malawi, sales are expected to reach $437.3 million in 2025, with an estimated average annual growth rate of 8.83% to 2029. In Zambia, revenues are expected to reach $342.6 million in the same year, with a similar growth rate of 8.7% per annum.

Increased competition to be expected

To consolidate its position, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa will nevertheless have to face fierce competition from both local operators and rival multinationals such as PepsiCo, also active in the region.

Conclusion

With this new production line, Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi confirms its ambitions to become a key player in the industrial landscape of Southern Africa. However, in a dynamic and competitive market, success will depend on the Group’s ability to innovate and adapt to changes in local and regional demand.

Fatal fall from building in China

The Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) announced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the death of Aaron Boupendza, Gabonese international striker, at the age of 28. The player reportedly died after falling from the 11th floor of his building in Hangzhou, eastern China, where he played for Zhejiang FC.

Unanimous tributes to a great name in Gabonese football

In a message posted on the X network, Fegafoot paid tribute to the memory of a remarkable player: “At 28 years old, Boupendza leaves the memory of a very great striker who made his mark during the CAN in Cameroon.” Gabonese president-elect Brice Oligui Nguema also expressed his sadness: “It is with immense sadness that I learn of the tragic passing of Aaron Boupendza, a talented center forward who brought honor to Gabonese football.”

An investigation is underway to shed light on the tragedy

According to state broadcaster Gabon 24, the exact circumstances of the fall remain unclear, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause. The tragedy occurred in the city of Hangzhou, where the player had been based since his transfer last January.

An international professional career

Trained at the Girondins de Bordeaux, Boupendza began his career in France with stints at Pau, Gazélec Ajaccio, and Tours. He then made his mark at Hatayspor in Turkey, then Al Arabi in Qatar, FC Cincinnati in the United States, and Rapid Bucharest in Romania, before joining China. He made his national team debut in 2016 against Uganda and has 35 caps, scoring eight goals.

An end of career marked by tensions with the national team

During the 2022 African Cup of Nations, Aaron Boupendza was a key player in the team led by Patrice Neveu. However, in April 2024, he was dropped from the national team by new coach Thierry Mouyouma after making comments deemed disrespectful. He later publicly reversed his comments and apologized to the coach and the Gabonese people.

Conclusion

The sudden death of Aaron Boupendza leaves a huge void in the Gabonese football landscape. A talented striker with a rich international career, he made his mark as much with his performances on the pitch as with his temperament. The sporting world pays tribute to a passionate player, who passed away too soon, in circumstances that have yet to be fully explained.

A promising season for Cameroonian nugget Yves Missi

African revelation of the year, Yves Missi made his mark in his very first NBA season with the New Orleans Pelicans. Drafted 21st in 2024, the 20-year-old Cameroonian interior quickly found his place in the rotation, establishing himself as an essential player despite a difficult collective context. With 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in an average of 27 minutes per game, he was voted rookie of the month in December in the Western Conference.
His impact was all the more visible as the Louisiana franchise endured a complicated season, finishing second-last in the West with just 21 wins. Missi, lucid about this performance, said he was frustrated but confident for the future, ready to build on the long term.
Beyond the NBA, the player hasn’t forgotten his roots. He called on Pascal Siakam, Christian Koloko and the other Cameroonian internationals to rise to the challenge of AfroBasket 2025, scheduled for Angola in August, with the stated aim of bringing home a continental medal, a first for Cameroon since 2007.

Kuminga between individual progress and uncertain future with the Warriors

NBA champion in 2022, Jonathan Kuminga continues his progression with the Golden State Warriors. At 22, the Congolese winger has been a valuable sixth man, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists despite an ankle injury that sidelined him for two months.
But Kuminga’s future in San Francisco is clouding. His understanding with veterans Stephen Curry and Draymond Green remains unclear, and the recent arrival of Jimmy Butler could redistribute the cards. Moreover, in the last decisive game against the Clippers, Kuminga wasn’t even used by Steve Kerr, a strong signal about his current situation. The Warriors will now have to pass through a play-off against Memphis to have any hope of reaching the playoffs.

Mouhamed Gueye, Senegal’s big surprise in Atlanta

Mouhamed Gueye, 22, has enjoyed a remarkable blossoming this season with the Atlanta Hawks, despite a timid start. Long confined to the G-League after being drafted 39th overall by the Hornets in 2023, the Senegalese pivot has taken advantage of injuries and roster moves to establish himself in the rotation.
With 11.9 points, 9 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 28 minutes, Gueye has clearly turned a corner. His coach, Quin Snyder, speaks of a ” false first season” due to his absence last year, but says he is ” very satisfied ” with his progress. With the Hawks facing Orlando in the play-offs, Gueye could well be one of the Georgian franchise’s major assets. A free agent in the off-season, he holds all the cards to secure an extension.

Joel Embiid, nightmare season and lingering concerns

The 2024-2025 season will undoubtedly go down as one of the most frustrating for Joel Embiid. The Cameroonian pivot, MVP in 2023, played just 19 games with the Philadelphia Sixers before being forced to shut down completely at the end of February, to treat a painful left knee.
Embiid has undergone meniscus surgery in the past, and has suffered one physical setback after another, aggravated this season by Bell’s facial paralysis. Despite a $134 million extension until 2029, the 2024 Olympic champion with the United States has not returned to his best. He himself admitted that he ” picked up too early ” after his last injury.
The Sixers, orphaned by their leader, suffered a collective wreck, finishing 13th in the East with a catastrophic record of 24 wins and 58 losses. This raises serious questions about Embiid’s future in Philadelphia, and his ability to regain full fitness.

A mixed season for NBA Africans

From the promising breakthroughs of Missi and Gueye, to the disillusionment and lingering doubts surrounding Embiid and Kuminga, this NBA season has confirmed the extent to which African talent is evolving in a variety of dynamics. While some, like Yves Missi, symbolize the future and vitality of African basketball, others will have to take up new challenges to confirm their status or bounce back.
With the AfroBasket 2025 and the Paris Olympics in their sights, many eyes will be on the up-and-coming African players who are already shining in the world’s biggest league.

A dazzling victory in the regional final

On April 3, 2025, FC Colibri, a dynamic young club from the Tshuapa province, won the final of the preliminary round of the Congo Cup with a 2-0 victory over FC Zaïre in Boende. This success enabled the club to reach the national phase of this prestigious competition for the first time. Supported by the WIDAL Foundation, FC Colibri’s rise to prominence on the Congolese soccer scene is as rapid as it is promising.

A faultless route to qualification

Despite its recent creation, FC Colibri quickly established itself as a major player in the Ecuadorian Football League, with impressive victories: 5-0 over AC Salam, then 5-0 over FC Saint Pierre, before completing its run with a deserved win in the final. The white-hot Guy Loando Mboyo Stadium vibrated to the rhythm of this collective performance.

A sports project with a social vision

More than just a soccer club, FC Colibri sees itself as a lever of hope for local youth. Backed by the WIDAL Foundation – headed by Maman Déborah Loando, with the support of Minister of State Guy Loando Mboyo – the club is part of a community development approach, where sport and social commitment go hand in hand.

A professional structure serving talent

The club’s success is based on rigorous organization, driven by a long-term vision. FC Colibri benefits from a solid technical team, modern infrastructure and managerial support that is rare at this level. The brand-new Guy Loando Mboyo Stadium has become the symbol of a serious and ambitious project, designed to foster the emergence of young local talent.

Outstanding individual performances

The final also highlighted several FC Colibri players:

Adrien Loyeke, voted Best Player of the tournament

Joël Ikima named Best Keeper

Ezechiel Isaoya, rewarded for his spirit of fair play

These individual distinctions testify to the quality of the squad and the hard work carried out within the club.

Conclusion: FC Colibri, a rising star in Congolese soccer

With this qualification for the Congo Cup, FC Colibri has confirmed its ambition to become a permanent fixture on the national soccer scene. With its committed youth, solid infrastructure and strong social vision, the club is becoming a symbol of unity, hope and development for the Tshuapa region… and beyond.

Live drama in the Accra ring

The scene shocked the sporting community: Gabriel Aluwasegun Olanrewagu, nicknamed “Success”, died after collapsing in the ring during a professional boxing match in Accra, Ghana, on the night of Saturday March 30, 2025. The Nigerian boxer did not survive his collapse, despite rapid medical intervention.

A fight stopped in the third round

A sudden fall after an intense exchange

The tragic incident occurred in the third round of an eight-round international fight organized by Osibor Boxing Promotions. Engaged in an exchange of blows with his Ghanaian opponent Jonathan “Power for Power” Mbanugu, Gabriel suddenly stepped back before collapsing without any sign of consciousness.
The referee, Richard Amevi, immediately interrupted the fight to allow emergency services to intervene. Gabriel was rushed to Korle Bu University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after admission.

A solid and respected career

The journey of a ring veteran

Aged 40 and originally from Lagos, Gabriel “Success” Olanrewagu had a busy career with 23 professional fights, including 13 victories and an impressive KO rate of 92.31%. He began his career in 2019, fighting a total of 99 rounds. Ranked 7th in Nigeria among light heavyweight boxers, he was 448th in the world.

A bitter victory for Jonathan Mbanugu

A young up-and-coming boxer marked by tragedy

His opponent for the day, 22-year-old Accra-born Jonathan Mbanugu, officially won by withdrawal, but his victory was tinged with sadness. With 12 wins from 14 fights and a 100% KO rate, he represented the future of Ghanaian boxing. The emotion is palpable in his words, spoken after the tragedy.

Post-combat investigation and procedure underway

Authorities seized, autopsy to follow

An official report has been forwarded to the Ghanaian police, and the Nigeria Boxing Authority has been informed. The body of the deceased currently lies at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where an autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.

Conclusion

The boxing world mourns a brutal loss

The disappearance of Gabriel “Success” Olanrewagu is a stark reminder of the risks inherent in professional boxing. This tragedy casts a shadow not only on the sport, but also on the medical and safety protocols governing competitions. While we await the results of the investigation, tributes are pouring in on social networks and in sporting circles in Nigeria and Ghana.
A thunderous start

Morocco got their CAN U17 2025 campaign off to a perfect start by crushing Uganda 5-0. In front of Mohammedia’s El Bachir stadium, the Atlas Cubs put in an impressive performance, combining power, control and efficiency.

From the kick-off, Ilies Belmokhtar and Driss Aït Chiekh quickly took the lead, putting pressure on the Ugandans. Ziyad Baha added another from the penalty spot before Belmokhtar scored twice just before the break. Chouaib Bellaarouch, imperial in the Moroccan goal, repelled the rare opposing attempts before Baha sealed the score in the 71st minute.

Morocco in search of a first U17 title

As hosts of the tournament, Morocco is dreaming of a historic coronation. Their squad, made up of players from the Mohammed VI Academy, Wydad, FUS and the European diaspora, has high ambitions. However, history recalls that in the CAN U17, only the host country Gambia (2005) managed to win the title.

Senegal, defending champions and great rivals

Among the main contenders, Senegal is the favorite. The defending champions enter the tournament with a new generation of players under the leadership of Pape Ibrahima Faye. Modest though he is, the coach refuses to be pressurized:
“My main objective is to qualify Senegal for the World Cup. If we reach the semi-finals or the final, it will be a great reward,” he told the CAF website.

Conclusion: A Successful First Test, but a Long Way to Go

With this sensational start, Morocco have positioned themselves as serious title contenders. But there’s still a long way to go, and they face a tough challenge against the other tournament favourites. At stake: qualification for the U17 World Cup in Qatar, where 10 African tickets will be distributed.

Côte d’Ivoire withdraws unexpectedly

The world of African soccer has been rocked by a last-minute change of heart: Côte d’Ivoire has decided not to host the U20 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Scheduled to run from April 26 to May 18, the tournament finds itself without a host, forcing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to find an emergency solution.

Reasons for Ivorian withdrawal

According to several sources, this decision is linked to financial and organizational constraints. Organizing a competition of this scale requires substantial investment and compliance with the strict standards imposed by CAF and FIFA. The Ivorian authorities were unable to guarantee these conditions, leading them to withdraw from the project.

Egypt in pole position to host the competition

With this withdrawal, Egypt emerged as the leading candidate to take over the organization. Initially envisaged as a mere logistical support, the North African nation could now host the entire tournament.

Egypt’s organizational strengths:
Modern infrastructure: high-quality stadiums and training centers
Efficient logistics: well-developed transport network facilitating travel
Recognized experience: host of CAN 2019 and CAN U20 2023

If CAF makes the decision official soon, the tournament could be held on the scheduled dates, thus limiting disruption.

Major challenge: qualification for the U20 World Cup

The CAN U20 is also a qualifying competition for the FIFA U20 World Cup, to be held in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025. Only the top four African teams will qualify.

A delay in organization could jeopardize the tournament, or even lead to its cancellation, a major blow for young talent in search of recognition. If no country comes forward quickly, CAF will have to find an alternative to designate the qualified African teams.

A sporting challenge for Egypt

If Egypt agrees to host the competition, its U20 team will face some formidable opposition in its group:

Morocco
South Africa
Nigeria

These nations have solid reputations in the training of young talent, making the Pharaohs ‘ qualification for the U20 World Cup particularly competitive.

Conclusion: An urgent decision expected from CAF

With the opening match scheduled for April 27, 2025, CAF must decide quickly on the new organization. Egypt seems to be the most credible option, but time is running out to ensure the smooth running of the tournament and preserve the chances of young African players on the international stage.

A glorious past on the Kyalami circuit

South Africa has long been a land of Formula 1, with Grand Prix races organized as far back as the 1960s. The Kyalami circuit, which has become a world reference, hosted the last African Grand Prix in 1993. This emblematic venue continues to make headlines, notably thanks to a recent short film shot by the Oracle Red Bull Racing team in November 2024.

Spotlight on Red Bull Racing

In the film, F1 legend David Coulthard drives an RB7 on the Kyalami circuit alongside South African spinner Samkeliso Thubane. Through this production, Red Bull highlights South Africans’ passion for motorsport and positions the country as a serious candidate for a return of F1 to the African continent.

Competition with Rwanda

While South Africa has clearly stated its ambitions, it will have to face growing competition. Rwanda, with the support of Lewis Hamilton, is actively preparing a project to host a Grand Prix. This rivalry could well accelerate F1’s return to Africa, highlighting the continent’s potential to host this prestigious event.

Conclusion: An African competition for F1

Between South Africa and Rwanda, the battle to host the first African Grand Prix since 1993 is on. Kyalami has a solid heritage and infrastructure, while Rwanda is banking on an ambitious project spearheaded by a star of the sport. Whatever the case may be, this momentum bears witness to a growing interest in the return of Formula 1 to Africa, a prospect that could soon become a reality.

A season marked by irregularity in the forwards

The 30th edition of the Ligue 1 national championship of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues with the return phase of the competition drawing to a close. Although the number of goalscorers is high, the consistency of the strikers’ performances leaves something to be desired, with an average of less than 0.5 goals per game this season in LINAFOOT.

The end of an era of serial scorers

In the DRC, the days when one or two players dominated the scoring charts seem to be over. With the playoffs approaching, it seems unlikely that any player will break the record of 24 goals in a single season, held by Jackson Muleka and Fily Traoré. The main reason for this is the irregularity of the current goalscorers, who are struggling to string together a string of goals over the course of the season.

Disappointing statistics despite a high number of goalscorers

Despite a total of over 200 registered scorers in the league, the current joint top scorers, Bolaboto Baposila (New Jack FC), Sylva Tshitenge, and Molia Lihozasia (AC Rangers), have only scored 7 goals each. These players, like the majority of their colleagues, average less than 0.5 goals per game, as their teams have already played 16 and 17 games respectively. This trend highlights the strikers’ difficulty in maintaining consistency in their performances.

A new generation of strikers in the making

With the departure of Fily Traoré from TP Mazembe and his great form of the previous season (14 goals), and the less prolific performance of Jephtée Kitambal (5 goals), a new generation of strikers seems to be taking over. Young players, some of them members of the DRC U20 national team, are emerging, such as Tony Talasi (AF Anges Verts) with 6 goals, or Oscar Kabwit (TP Mazembe) with 5.

Goalkeepers on target: a surprising trend

Another feature of this season is the emergence of goalkeepers. Alioune Badara Faty, now TP Mazembe’s penalty-taker par excellence, has already converted 4 penalties. Souleimane Shaïbu, a former TP Mazembe goalkeeper who has been converted into a striker, has made a promising start to the season with 6 goals.

Conclusion: A competition in search of consistency

Although the number of goalscorers is encouraging, the DRC’s Ligue 1 is going through a season marked by the irregularity of its strikers. With the emergence of new talents and surprising figures such as goalkeepers, the competition awaits a renewal in the consistency of striker performances to offer more spectacle in this crucial phase of the playoffs…
