Niger signs deal with Russian space agency subsidiary for three satellites

Signing of a strategic partnership for regional security

Niger’s military government has signed an agreement with Glavkosmos, a subsidiary of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, to acquire three satellites to strengthen national and regional security. The ambitious project addresses surveillance and defense needs in the Sahel region, which has been hit by jihadist attacks.

Project details: three satellites for specific missions

According to Nigerien public radio, this agreement provides for the deployment of three types of satellites: a communications satellite, a remote sensing satellite and a radar satellite, specially designed for the security needs of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. The construction of the satellites, provided by Russia, will extend over four years. While awaiting their delivery, Glavkosmos undertakes to rent similar equipment to guarantee immediate surveillance.

Control centers and team training

Niger has requested the establishment of the satellite command centre in one of the ESA countries, with a secondary reception and transmission centre for each member state. This partnership also includes the training of local teams that will be responsible for managing these infrastructures, an essential element to ensure the technical and operational sovereignty of the region.

Conclusion: an initiative strengthening regional sovereignty

This strategic agreement with Russia marks an important step forward for Niger and its Sahelian allies in managing their security. By providing the region with advanced surveillance capabilities, this project contributes to strengthening the resilience of States in the face of security threats, while asserting their technological sovereignty.
