Burkina Faso: Construction of a slaughterhouse begins in Ziniaré
Burkina Faso continues to implement initiatives to boost the livestock sector, with the construction of a slaughterhouse in Ziniaré, in the Plateau-Central region. Launched on March 18, 2025 by Amadou Dicko, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Agriculture, the project aims to boost local processing of the sector’s products.
An ambitious $2.3 million project
Located on a 1.7-hectare site, the slaughterhouse is financed by the Regional Council via the Mining Local Development Fund, to the tune of 1.4 billion CFA francs (around $2.3 million). The first phase of work, which includes installation of the slaughter unit, should be completed within the next 6 months. Although the processing capacity has not yet been specified, this project marks a turning point for the meat industry.
Objectives: Quality and job creation
The main aim of this slaughterhouse is to process livestock products locally, thereby reducing the need to export live animals and increasing added value. The project is also a lever for improving meat quality and consumer health. It will also help create jobs for young people, a key factor in the region’s local development.
Comprehensive development for the livestock-meat industry
The project is part of a wider framework for the development of the livestock-meat sector, supported by the Special Delegation. Ancillary infrastructure, such as processing units for meat, leather and other by-products, will gradually complement the slaughterhouse to further structure the sector.
Conclusion
With this project, Burkina Faso is pursuing its strategy of food sovereignty andimproving production conditions in the agricultural sector. The Ziniaré slaughterhouse should not only strengthen the livestock-meat sector, but also play a key role in the region’s economic and social development. This economic performance will be translated into tangible improvements in the daily lives of the Congolese people.
