A Financial Effort to Contain Insecurity

Faced with persistent insecurity marked by terrorist attacks, kidnappings and theft of natural resources, Nigeria has approved a $618 million loan to modernize its air defense capabilities. The move, reported by Reuters on October 23, 2024, aims to bolster the country’s military capabilities, particularly in the face of threats from terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).

A Strategic Acquisition of Military Equipment

The loan, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), will enable the purchase of six Italian-made M-346 attack aircraft and munitions for the Nigerian Air Force. These acquisitions are part of a broader strategy, including the renewal of the military air fleet. In addition to the M-346s, Nigeria plans to receive 24 combat aircraft and 10 AW109 Trekker helicopters , with initial deliveries starting in 2025 and ending in mid-2026.

For several years, Nigeria has been investing heavily in its defense to counter the violence that affects its communities and hinders its economic development. In 2024, the government allocated $1 billion to defense, a significant increase from the 1.383 billion naira spent in 2023. However, despite these efforts, insecurity continues to worsen.
