Kenya: Political agreement between President Ruto and Raila Odinga

A strategic rapprochement after a political crisis

Kenyan President William Ruto and his former rival Raila Odinga signed a political cooperation agreement on Friday. This commitment aims to reinforce the stability of the government after months of popular protest, notably against unpopular tax projects that provoked massive demonstrations and left at least 60 people dead, according to human rights organizations.

A partnership to meet national challenges

Faced with a crisis of confidence, Mr. Ruto chose to join forces with Mr. Odinga to form a “broad-based government”. The agreement signed aims to ease tensions and redirect the country’s economic and social priorities, focusing on the growing debt and the fight against corruption.

“We must realign our priorities to meet the expectations of the youth”, declared Raila Odinga, historic opposition leader and unsuccessful candidate in five presidential elections. For his part, William Ruto asserted that the alliance represented “a path to the promised land where freedom and opportunity are guaranteed for all”.

A political calculation for 2027?

Some analysts believe that this rapprochement could above all be a strategy to consolidate Ruto’s presidency with a view to his re-election in 2027. Political analyst Barrack Muluka points out that “everything that could go wrong with the government has gone wrong, and Ruto’s election promises have not been kept”.

Had Odinga remained in opposition, he could have posed a major political threat to the president. This cooperation could thus be a way for Ruto to neutralize an influential opponent and ensure his political longevity.

Conclusion: A pragmatic but uncertain alliance

Although both leaders insist that this is not a full coalition, the agreement marks a turning point in Kenyan politics.
