Ivory Coast: African champions come back down to earth after their first defeat

An end of invincibility for the Elephants

After their victory at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire suffered their first defeat under Emerse Faé. The setback against Sierra Leone (0-1) on Tuesday not only broke their unbeaten streak, but also pushed back their qualification for the 2025 AFCON to November.

The end of a beautiful series

The Elephants’ honeymoon has come to an end after an impressive 11-match unbeaten run. Since Emerse Faé took over, following the heavy defeat against Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, Côte d’Ivoire had enjoyed a string of successes, notably eliminating Senegal, Mali, and DR Congo before securing a third star by beating Nigeria in the final. Sierra Leone finally ended this run by winning 1-0 in Monrovia.

A beneficial defeat?

This defeat, while painful for Ivorian fans, could prove positive in the long run. It offers the team an opportunity to come back down to earth after eight months of uninterrupted success. With the last two qualifying matches against Zambia and Chad in sight, the Elephants will be able to approach these games with a new determination, hungrier than ever to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

Emerse Faé, now aware of the areas for improvement, will be able to adjust his team, in particular by demanding more from his rotation players, in order to make the group even more competitive for the next challenges.

Conclusion

The Elephants’ defeat against Sierra Leone, while surprising, could be a blessing in disguise. It allows the team to remain focused on its objectives, while also providing Emerse Faé with an opportunity to learn lessons ahead of the final stages of qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
