Cameroon: Teachers launch four days of nationwide “dead school”
Massive strike in all establishments
In Cameroon, teachers are calling for a four-day general strike, from Tuesday, April 22 to Friday, April 25, 2025. The movement, dubbed “Dead School,” targets both public and private schools across the country. It is being coordinated by more than a dozen unions grouped together within the Collective of Teachers’ Organizations of Cameroon (Corec).
Six main demands

The teachers’ unions are putting forward six major demands, including the organization of a national forum to rethink education and the upgrading of teachers’ special status so that they can fully devote themselves to teaching. They are also calling for a specific collective agreement for private-sector teachers.

A strike notice was sent to the authorities at the end of March. Since then, several discussions have been held with the relevant ministries, including a meeting at the Ministry of Civil Service on April 17 to examine the issue of teachers’ status.
A tense context as exams approach
This move comes as regional delegates have just announced the upcoming holding of mock exams. Faced with this situation, teachers are now waiting for “a strong gesture” from the government to meet their expectations.
