Basketball: Congolese Clubs Dominate Central Africa

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is now marking its supremacy in club basketball in Central Africa. During the qualifiers for the 2024-2025 Interclub Cups held in Douala, Congolese teams won against their opponents, including Cameroonian clubs, long dominant in the sub-region.

A Remarkable Presence of Congolese Clubs in Douala

From October 27 to November 1, Douala hosted the “Road to BAL” competition for men’s teams and “Road to WBLA” for women’s teams from Central Africa. Ten teams, five per category, competed for victory. Cameroon, as the host country, fielded renowned clubs such as Kadji Sport Academy for men and FAP and Daniel Batistton Foundation for women. The DRC, for its part, registered BC Chaux Sport and BC Makomeno, and other teams from the region were also present.

Crushing Victory for BC Chaux Sport and Congolese Women’s Clubs

For its first appearance on the continental scene, BC Chaux Sport had a flawless run in the men’s competition, winning four out of four matches, notably against Abeilles BC (79-61) and Kadji Sport Academy (83-78), thus ensuring their qualification for the Elite 16.

In the women’s category, the Congolese teams, BC Makomeno and BC CNSS, also dominated, occupying the first two places in their category. They broke the Cameroonian hegemony by beating reference clubs like FAP, thus marking a turning point in women’s basketball in the sub-region.

Detailed Results: The Douala Phare Meetings

BC CNSS scored impressive victories against Cameroonian clubs, including Daniel Batistton Fondation (61-55) and FAP (61-38), as well as against BC NABA of Gabon (131-33), before losing to Makomeno (46-73) in an all-Congolese duel. BC Makomeno, meanwhile, defeated CNSS, FAP (74-72), and NABA (73-38), but conceded a defeat against Daniel Batistton Fondation (62-52). These two Congolese women’s teams are now qualified for the final phase scheduled for December 6-15 in Dakar.

Elite 16: A Difficult Event for BC Chaux Sport

Following their success in Douala, BC Chaux Sport had high expectations for the Elite 16. However, the DRC champions failed to maintain the same level of performance and lost their first two matches against MDA of Gabon (65-72) and Stade Malien (65-72). Despite a surge in the last match against ABC Fighters of Côte d’Ivoire, which they won 88-85, their journey came to an end, marking a less glorious end than that of Espoir Fukash, another Congolese team that had reached the conferences in 2022.

Conclusion: The DRC on the Roof of Central African Basketball

Despite the disappointment of the Elite 16, Congolese clubs have undeniably made a splash on the Central African basketball scene. Their comeback, both for men and women, marks a new era for basketball in the DRC, solidifying its place as a regional leader and promising great prospects for the development of the sport in the country. By publicly denouncing these acts, N’Djamena is sending a clear message to Sudan, but also to the international community, to draw attention to dynamics that could threaten regional stability.
