N’Djamena Accusations: Chad Denounces Sudanese Intervention

In an official statement released on Friday, the Chadian government accused Sudan of financing and arming rebel groups with the aim of “destabilizing” the country. This announcement comes in a context of growing tensions between the two neighboring countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and spokesman for the Chadian government, Abdraman Koulamallah, denounced what he called “prolonged subversion” orchestrated from Sudanese territory.

Ousman Dillo’s Zaghawa Rebellion: A Source of Concern for Chad

N’Djamena is particularly concerned about the presence of a Zaghawa rebellion in El Facher, a town in southwestern Sudan. This rebel faction is led by Ousman Dillo, younger brother of Yaya Dillo Djérou, a Chadian opponent killed by the army last spring. According to the Chadian government, this rebellion could represent a direct threat to the stability of the country, reviving memories of past violent incursions.

Memories of an Offensive in 2008: The Memory of a Shared Crisis

The current tensions are reminiscent of the events of February 2008, when Chadian rebels from the Zaghawa ethnic group, operating from Sudan, launched a major offensive on N’Djamena. This lightning attack forced former President Idriss Déby Itno (1990-2021) to retreat into the presidential palace, before loyalist forces, with crucial support from France, finally managed to repel the attackers. The Chadian government also recalls the incursion of the FACT rebellion, which contributed to the fall and death of former President Déby.

Chad’s Position: Preserving Regional Stability

For the Chadian authorities, the current situation requires increased vigilance to prevent history from repeating itself. By publicly denouncing these acts, N’Djamena is sending a clear message to Sudan, but also to the international community, to draw attention to dynamics that could threaten regional stability.

Conclusion: A Call for International Cooperation to Stem Cross-Border Conflicts

As Chad faces accusations against its neighbor, the country emphasizes the importance of regional and international cooperation to limit tensions and end armed support for rebel groups. For N’Djamena, this intervention by Sudan represents a serious threat to the stability of the sub-region. The future of peace between the two nations now seems to depend on their ability to establish a frank dialogue and cooperate to prevent any escalation of the conflict.
