The Barsalogho Massacre in Burkina Faso: “The investigation is almost complete,” announces Captain Traoré

Context: A tragedy that shakes Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso, hit by growing insecurity due to jihadist attacks, was marked by a particularly tragic massacre in late August 2023. On August 24, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) claimed responsibility for an attack in Barsalogho, a town in the north-central part of the country. The massacre is considered one of the deadliest in Burkina Faso’s recent history, although the government has not yet released an official toll. According to the Collectif Justice pour Barsalogho (CJB), an organization bringing together relatives of the victims, the tragedy left more than 400 dead.

The attack sparked strong emotion among the Burkinabe population and great anger towards the authorities. The massacre occurred as civilians were mobilized to dig trenches around the city, a defensive measure encouraged by the security forces to prevent terrorist attacks.

Captain Traoré reacts: “We are almost at the end of this investigation”

This Saturday, on the occasion of the second anniversary of the coup, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, president of the transition in Burkina Faso, spoke publicly for the first time about this tragedy. In an interview with public radio RTB , he assured that the investigation into the Barsalogho massacre was almost finalized.

“The military authorities have carried out several missions to Barsalogho to investigate, and the investigation is also continuing in Kaya,” Captain Traoré said. He said the conclusions of this investigation should be available in the coming days, specifying that “sanctions will fall” once responsibilities are clearly established. However, this statement has not calmed all tensions. The Collectif Justice pour Barsalogho still considers Captain Traoré as the “primarily responsible” for the tragedy, accusing his government of having endangered civilians by forcing them to participate in defense work without adequate protection.

Towards sanctions and responsibilities to be established

The announcement of the imminent conclusions of the investigation and the promise of sanctions in the event of established responsibilities mark a turning point in this affair. At a time when the country is in the grip of political and security instability, the management of this tragedy could have repercussions on the legitimacy of Captain Traoré and his transitional government. The absence of broadcasting of Captain Traoré’s statements on national television, and their limited retransmission on the radio, also raises questions about the transparency and communication of the government on this highly anticipated investigation.

Conclusion: A nation waiting for justice

The Barsalogho massacre is a tragic reminder of the colossal challenges facing Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism. While Captain Ibrahim Traoré assures that sanctions will be taken and that light will be shed on this attack, the population is still waiting for clear and rapid justice. The outcome of this investigation will be decisive in easing social tensions and restoring confidence in the transitional authorities, in a country where civilians continue to suffer the dramatic consequences of insecurity.
