Tanzania: World Bank provides USD 200 million to improve the interconnection of the future Msalato airport
New support to accompany Dodoma’s growth
The World Bank has approved USD 200 million in financing to support the Dodoma Integrated and Sustainable Transport (DIST) Project , aimed at strengthening connectivity around the future Msalato International Airport . This project is part of a context of strong urban growth in Dodoma, now at the heart of Tanzania’s development strategy.
Msalato, a strategic alternative to Dodoma airport
Faced with the geographical limitations of the current Dodoma airport , the Tanzanian government launched the construction of Msalato International Airport in 2022 , designed to accommodate international flights with modern infrastructure. This is a major lever for strengthening the economic attractiveness of the capital and supporting its administrative growth.
Modernized road infrastructure for better integration
The first component of the DIST project concerns the modernization of three key road axes :
- Dodoma–Morogoro (32.1 km)
- Dodoma–Iringa (4.1 km)
- Dodoma–Arusha (8.5 km)
These axes will enable the integration of Msalato airport into the national logistics network , thus facilitating the flow of passengers and goods , particularly between Dodoma and Arusha, an important regional diplomatic centre.
A structuring project with diversified financing
The total cost of the airport project is estimated at USD 329.47 million , with joint participation from the Tanzanian government , the African Development Bank , and the Harmonious Development Fund (AGTF) .
Delivery of the first phase of the project is expected by the end of 2025 .
