Niger: Ban on Rice and Cereal Exports, Except to Burkina Faso and Mali

The military regime in Niger has announced a ban on exports of rice and certain cereals in order to protect the supply of the local market. This measure, taken by General Abdourahamane Tiani, aims to guarantee the availability of basic foodstuffs for the Nigerien population, according to a statement released Wednesday by the government.

Protection of the internal market

General Tiani, head of the Nigerien military authorities, justified this decision by the need to secure the supply of consumer products, including rice, millet, sorghum, cowpea and corn. These foodstuffs are essential to the diet of Nigeriens, especially in a context of economic and security tensions.

The ban mainly concerns exports to third countries, with the notable exceptions of Burkina Faso and Mali. These two countries, also ruled by the military after coups d’état, form with Niger the Alliance of Sahel States (ESA), a regional confederation born of solidarity between these governments. Trade with these two neighbors therefore remains authorized, strengthening economic ties between these allied countries.

Penalties for offenders

The Nigerien government has clarified that criminal penalties will be applied in the event of violation of this ban. Violators are exposed to seizures of their cargoes, thus reinforcing the state’s control over trade and food supply.

Conclusion

This decision to ban rice and cereal exports, except to Burkina Faso and Mali, demonstrates Niger’s desire to protect its food reserves in the face of a difficult economic situation. By favouring its two neighbours allied within the Alliance of Sahel States, Niger is consolidating its regional relations while seeking to meet the food needs of its population.
