Washington supports political transition in Gabon

An American commitment to an inclusive transition

The United States reaffirmed its support for Gabon’s ongoing political transition following the 2023 coup that ousted former President Ali Bongo Ondimba. The State Department issued a statement Thursday, stressing the importance of an inclusive and transparent political process. Washington advocates for free and fair elections, consistent with commitments made by Gabonese transitional authorities.

Enhanced cooperation in defence matters

In a regional context marked by growing tensions, the United States has also advocated for increased defense cooperation with Gabon. This increased cooperation would aim to stabilize the region, at a time when several Central African countries are facing significant security challenges. American support could play a key role in maintaining peace and managing political transitions in the region.

Meeting between Antony Blinken and Brice Oligui Nguema

Gabonese transitional president General Brice Oligui Nguema was received Tuesday in Washington by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. During this meeting, Blinken reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Gabon in its transition to democratic elections. Nguema, who has promised to hand over power to civilians in 2025, does not hide his intention to run in the presidential election scheduled for August of the same year.

The 2023 Coup: A Political Turning Point in Gabon

On August 30, 2023, the Gabonese army overthrew President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled the country for 14 years. This coup was strongly criticized by the international community. However, the transition led by Brice Oligui Nguema aims to restore democracy in the country, with the promise of elections in 2025.

Conclusion

Washington is actively supporting Gabon’s political transition, encouraging a transparent and inclusive democratic process. By advocating for enhanced defense cooperation, the United States is also seeking to stabilize the region and support Gabon in this transition period. It remains to be seen how the 2025 elections will unfold, as General Nguema, at the heart of this transition, appears to be considering a long-term political role.
