Tragic shipwreck off the coast of the Comoros: smugglers allegedly deliberately sank the boat

A migration drama between the Comoros and Mayotte

The sinking of a boat between the Comoros and Mayotte, which caused the death of at least 25 people, is believed to be the result of intentional action by smugglers. According to the testimony of a 19-year-old survivor, the smugglers deliberately sank the boat before fleeing on another boat. The young man, who requested anonymity, reported the incident from Anjouan, an island in the Comoros archipelago, via the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The tragic tale of a perilous crossing

According to the survivor, the boat was carrying about thirty people who left Maraharé, in Anjouan, around 7 p.m. Three hours after departure, around 10 p.m., the smugglers allegedly opened the hull plug to let water in. By cutting the engine, they allegedly claimed that it had broken down, subsequently refusing to call for help despite the worsening situation. Shortly after, a large wave capped the boat, throwing the passengers into the sea.

A desperate rescue and escape from the smugglers

As the boat sank, the smugglers fled in a speedboat, abandoning the migrants in the rough waters. The young survivor said he managed to stay afloat by swimming and helping two others cling to the overturned hull. It was not until morning that local fishermen finally spotted and rescued them.

The danger of the migratory route to Mayotte

This 70-kilometre stretch of sea, separating the Comoros from Mayotte, represents one of the most dangerous migration routes in the region. Since Mayotte became a French department in 2011, many Comorians have sought to emigrate there to escape precariousness, at the risk of ending up in the hands of unscrupulous smugglers. This tragedy highlights the dangers faced by migrants seeking to reach the island, where controls are reinforced but living conditions are perceived as more favourable.

Call for justice despite fear of reprisals

The young survivor expressed his wish that the smugglers be found and tried for their actions, which he said were responsible for many lost lives. However, for fear of reprisals, he indicated that he did not want to file a complaint. “I am afraid of what could happen to me if I go to the gendarmerie or the police,” he said, reflecting the anxiety that many migrants experience when faced with trafficking networks.

Conclusion: A tragedy revealing the challenges of migration in the Indian Ocean

This shipwreck illustrates once again the tragic risks of illegal migration between the Comoros and Mayotte. As crossings increase, authorities in both territories are facing a complex humanitarian emergency, requiring increased coordination to combat smuggling networks, raise awareness of the risks and strengthen security measures. Tragedies like this highlight the need for an integrated response to protect human lives in this region in the grip of a migration crisis.
