Togo launches construction of a National Digital Health Center to improve access to care

A project supported by the UNDP as part of the Togo Digital 2025 plan

Togo recently launched the construction of a National Digital Health Center in Lomé, funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This project is part of the national Togo Digital 2025 plan , which focuses on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve access to health services. Among the flagship initiatives, the development of telemedicine and tele-expertise aim to facilitate remote care.

A center to manage digital health and optimize resource management

According to the Minister Counselor of Health, Aristide Afèignindou Gnassingbé, the National Center for Digital Health will play a central role in the governance of digital health activities. It will ensure the interoperability of systems, the compliance of projects, and facilitate the collection of essential health data for epidemiological surveillance. This center will also act as an incubator for digital solutions, strengthening Togo’s capacity to respond to health crises through automated surveillance systems and better distribution of medical resources.

Digitalization of health services and training of professionals

In addition to managing health crises, the center will contribute to the overall digitalization of health services, particularly through training professionals in emerging technologies. Another objective is to popularize the use of electronic medical records, with the aim of making care more accessible and more efficient. This project is part of a broader strategy to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into several key sectors of the country, including health.

Towards a national policy of Artificial Intelligence

At the same time, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Digital Transformation has launched a call for applications to recruit experts in Artificial Intelligence. Their mission will be to identify the challenges and perspectives related to AI to support the development of Togo in strategic sectors such as health, education and agro-industry. This approach aims to develop a national AI policy, in response to the rise of generative Artificial Intelligence in public administrations.

Conclusion: A key project for the digital development of Togo

The National Digital Health Center represents a major step in Togo’s digital transformation. By leveraging technology to improve the accessibility and management of health services, this project symbolizes the country’s ambitions to become a regional leader in digital health. The gradual integration of Artificial Intelligence in key sectors will open up new perspectives for Togo’s development by 2025.
