Tanzania and the European Union: agreements in favour of sustainable development and gender equality
Two agreements for a sustainable future
On 9 December 2024, Tanzania and the European Union signed two agreements totalling €14 million. These partnerships aim to promote sustainable development, protect the marine environment and strengthen gender equality in the country.
“Bahari Yetu” Agreement: 11 million euros for marine conservation
The first agreement, called “Bahari Yetu” (Our Ocean) , has a budget of 11 million euros and will be implemented in Zanzibar by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The main objectives of this project are:
- Empowering local communities by creating sustainable economic opportunities.
- Protect marine biodiversity and promote ecosystem-friendly fishing.
- Fight against plastic pollution , which seriously threatens marine resources.
This initiative highlights the importance of a balance between economic development and environmental preservation.
Gender and leadership: 3 million euros to strengthen women’s rights
The second agreement, worth €3 million, will extend the European Union’s Gender Transformative Action Programme to Zanzibar. Implemented in collaboration with UN Women and the Tanzanian Ministry of Gender, the initiative aims to:
- Remove barriers to women’s access to their fundamental rights.
- Encourage female leadership , by promoting their role in the public and private sectors.

These agreements reinforce the commitments of the European Union and Tanzania to ecological transition and gender equality, two essential pillars for inclusive and sustainable development.
