Rwanda Bets on GMOs to Boost Agricultural Productivity

Rwanda is stepping up its agricultural modernization approach by introducing genetically modified (GMO) varieties that are resistant to diseases, pests and drought. The strategy aims to improve the productivity of its strategic crops and strengthen national food security.

A Biotechnology Program Supported by International Partners

The National Biotechnology Program, launched on October 11, 2024, is an initiative of the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) in collaboration with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF). With $9.9 million in funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project, which will run until 2029, aims to introduce GM crops into priority sectors such as cassava, maize and potatoes. The partnership is supported by international organizations including Bayer, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and Michigan State University.Targeted Trials to Reduce Losses and Improve Yields

Rwanda has already initiated trials of genetically modified cassava and potato varieties. In September 2024, tests began on potato varieties resistant to late blight, a fungal disease that threatens crops in East Africa with losses of up to 100%. This biotechnology project promises to provide Rwandan farmers with more resilient varieties, thereby increasing yields and household incomes.

Favorable Legislation for the Use and Marketing of GMOs

To facilitate the adoption of GMOs, the Rwandan government approved a law on July 13, 2023, authorizing the use, processing, marketing, and import-export of genetically modified organisms. Although no GMO products are yet cultivated on a large scale, this law provides a legal basis for the future adoption of these innovations.
