Red Sea Access: Ethiopia Advocates Peaceful Approach

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Reaffirms His Pacifist Position

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated on Thursday that Ethiopia has “no interest in getting involved in a war” to gain access to the sea. Despite regional tensions, he insisted on a diplomatic approach to geopolitics, particularly on maritime access, a crucial issue for the large landlocked country.

Somaliland Agreement in the Spotlight

The agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, has fueled controversy. The memorandum of understanding provides for a 50-year lease of 20 km of coastline in Somaliland, giving Ethiopia strategic access to the Red Sea. In return, Ethiopia would become the first country to officially recognize the Republic of Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991. The deal has caused tensions with Somalia, which still considers Somaliland part of its territory.

Conclusion

The Ethiopia-Somaliland deal, while beneficial to Ethiopia, raises sensitive issues in the region. By seeking a peaceful and diplomatic solution to its maritime ambitions, Ethiopia is signaling its intention to prioritize dialogue, but will have to manage the repercussions on its relations with Somalia.
