Presidential election 2025 in Cameroon: Akere Muna, the return of “Mr Clean

A candidate with an international background and a strong commitment

World-renowned lawyer, former vice-president of Transparency International and a leading figure in African civil society, Akere Muna has confirmed his candidacy for the presidential election scheduled for October 2025. At the age of 72, the man nicknamed “Mr. Clean” is back on the campaign trail, determined to bring a wind of change to Cameroon.

A second attempt after 2018

Already a candidate in 2018, Akere Muna withdrew in favor of Maurice Kamto on the eve of the vote, in a move seen as a call for opposition unity. This time, he seems determined to go all the way, believing that the time has come to propose a credible and rigorous alternative to a system that has been in place for over 40 years.

A family tradition of public service

For the Muna family, political commitment is a legacy. His father, Solomon Tandeng Muna, was an emblematic figure in Cameroon’s political history: vice-president, prime minister, then president of the National Assembly. His brother, Bernard Muna, also made his mark on the national scene, running in the 2011 presidential election. Today, Akere intends to continue this legacy, adding a more modern, more transparent and resolutely forward-looking vision.

A vision focused on transparency and governance

At the heart of his program: the fight against corruption, institutional reform, strengthening the rule of law, and a more inclusive economy. Aware of the disenchantment of a youth faced with unemployment and precariousness, Muna wants to make social justice a priority. His goal is to ” reconcile Cameroon with itself ” and build a state that respects its citizens.

Conclusion: a major challenge in a locked landscape

In a political climate still dominated by the CPDM and President Paul Biya, who has been in power for more than four decades, Akere Muna faces a difficult task. But with his international stature, image of integrity and message of reform, he embodies the hope of a republican alternative. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to unite an often fragmented opposition and mobilize a sometimes resigned population. In any case, his candidacy is breathing new life into democratic debate in a country in search of renewal.
