Niger: Junta releases political detainees, but keeps Mohamed Bazoum in custody
A wave of releases announced
On Tuesday April 1, the Nigerien authorities announced the release of some fifty personalities arrested after the coup d’état in July 2023. Among them were former ministers of the deposed regime, an ex-ambassador, a journalist and soldiers accused of attempted putsches. However, former president Mohamed Bazoum remains in detention.
A decision in line with national recommendations
This measure is in line with the recommendations of the national conference on refoundation. Beneficiaries include Mahamane Sani Issoufou, son of former president Mahamadou Issoufou, as well as influential former ministers such as Kalla Moutari (Defense), Ahmed Djidoud (Finance) and Ibrahim Yacoubou (Energy). Foumakoye Gado, president of the former ruling PNDS party, and journalist Ousmane Toudou are also among those released.
The case of Mohamed Bazoum: a major political issue
Despite this wave of releases, Mohamed Bazoum, overthrown in July 2023 by General Abdourahamane Tiani, remains in prison. His continued detention is fuelling speculation about the intentions of the junta, which may wish to prevent any mobilization of his supporters. Charged with high treason, undermining state security and apology for terrorism, he was questioned in August 2024 as part of a preliminary investigation.
Conclusion: A partial release with strategic implications
While several organizations, including the UN, have called for the release of Bazoum and his wife, the Niger junta remains adamant. This decision reflects the junta’s determination to retain political control of the country, while at the same time pledging appeasement through the release of other figures from the deposed regime.
