A symbolic promotion for the transitional president
The head of the Guinean military junta and transitional president, Mamadi Doumbouya, has been promoted to the rank of army general. This decision, made official by decree on November 2, 2024, coincides with the celebration of the 66th anniversary of the Guinean army. Doumbouya also promoted several officers to the rank of general during the same ceremony.
Military honours and national distinctions
During the celebration, Mamadi Doumbouya was decorated with the Croix de Guerre, a military distinction honoring his commitment to defending Guinea. In addition, he was elevated to the title of Grand Cross of the National Order of the Colatier, the country’s highest distinction, which recognizes his action in favor of national cohesion and international cooperation.

Having come to power following a coup against former President Alpha Condé on September 5, 2021, Mamadi Doumbouya was quickly invested as transitional president. Initially promoted to the rank of army corps general on an exceptional basis, this recent promotion to the rank of army general marks a new level in his career, consolidating his position as head of the Guinean military forces.
Commitment to making power questioned
Despite an initial commitment by the junta to organize a transition to civilian rule by the end of 2024, there are several signs that it may be changing course. The junta recently announced that it would not respect this transition timetable. Voices have been raised within the government, including those of the presidential spokesperson and the government, in favor of Doumbouya’s candidacy in the next presidential elections, although the transition charter prohibits the participation of the military in elections.
Conclusion
Mamadi Doumbouya’s appointment to the rank of army general and the distinctions he has received appear to strengthen his power in Guinea. The extension of the transition and the prospect of a possible presidential candidacy by Doumbouya raise questions about the political future of the country and the evolution of the army’s role in the democratic process.
