Gabon aims for 100% clean energy mix by 2035
At the joint summit of the African Union and the European Union in Brussels, President Ali Bongo affirmed his government’s commitment to prioritising clean energy , with a target set for 2035 .
Leadership in renewable energy
Gabon is positioning itself as a leader in the eco-responsible exploitation of its natural resources and in the fight against global warming. The country is committed to achieving an entirely clean energy mix, mainly based on hydroelectricity . President Bongo reiterated this commitment on February 17 at the summit, highlighting the concrete actions taken to achieve this ambitious goal.
Current initiatives for the development of renewable energies
To support this energy transition, Gabon is working with Ausar Energy , a subsidiary of Engie Africa , to install eight hybrid solar power plants in the North-West regions, including Bitam, Ndjolé, and Makokou. These plants will reduce annual diesel consumption by 1 million liters , equivalent to a reduction of 2,600 tons of CO2 . In addition, this initiative is expected to reduce production costs by 30% .
In parallel, the companies Amea Power of the Emirates and Desiba Energy of Turkey are planning the construction of two photovoltaic power plants in Oyem (50 MW) and Mouila (20 MW). On a broader scale, Gabon is implementing various projects to preserve the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change. In particular, the Nkok Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has obtained carbon neutrality certification , a world first for an industrial zone.
Call for investment and reforms
President Ali Bongo has invited potential investors to support his country’s energy transition policies, aimed at gradually abandoning fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions . He also expressed the hope that these reforms will have positive effects on the Gabonese economy and people.
Conclusion
Gabon has set ambitious energy transition goals, aiming to achieve a 100% clean energy mix by 2035. With concrete initiatives and strategic partnerships, the country aspires to become a model for the sustainable exploitation of natural resources. President Bongo’s call to investors underlines the importance of increased collaboration to achieve these goals, while having a positive impact on the Gabonese economy and population.
