A strategic state visit to Washington

In addition to the economic aspects, Ramaphosa stressed the importance of existing collaboration between the two countries in areas such as health (notably via the PEPFAR program to combat HIV/AIDS), security, the environment, education and scientific research.

Since January 2025, relations between the two countries had deteriorated sharply. An American decree allowing white Afrikaners to apply for asylum had provoked a strong reaction from Pretoria. This was compounded by the introduction of a 30% tax on South African products and the suspension of certain U.S. aid, further exacerbating the diplomatic crisis.

Trade still going strong

Despite these tensions, trade between the USA and South Africa reached $20.7 billion in 2024, according to the International Trade Centre, testifying to a still significant economic partnership.
