Dakar Regional Express Train strengthened with 5 new trainsets

Capacity increased to 300,000 passengers a day

As part of theextension of the Dakar Regional Express Train (TER), Senegal has ordered 5 new trainsets, bringing the total to 27 units. This reinforcement is designed to improve service on existing lines and to support the commissioning of phase 2 of the project.

Strategic expansion of the rail network

The Minister of Land and Air Transport, Yankhoba Diémé, confirmed that 21 trainsets are currently in circulation, compared with the original 15. The new units will be deployed on the 19 km extension linking Blaise Diagne International Airport to Thiès and Mbour. This expansion is designed to improve the flow of traffic between Dakar and its airport, located some 50 km from the city center.

A growing success since 2021

Since its entry into service in December 2021, the TER has established itself as a key means of transport in and around the capital. In 2024, over 21 million passengers used the network, according to Société d’Exploitation et de Maintenance du TER (SETER).

Phase 1 of the project currently carries up to 115,000 passengers a day. With these new additions, the TER aims to carry 300,000 passengers a day.
