Chad: Temporary suspension of US visa issuance for 90 days

Since March 25, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Ndjamena has suspended the issuance of visas for a period of 90 days. A message posted on the diplomatic representation’s website clearly states: “No visa appointments can be made at the U.S. Embassy in Ndjamena”.

Types of visa affected by the suspension

This suspension mainly concerns tourist, study and business visas. However, applicants for diplomatic visas or those in possession of a resident card are not affected by this measure. Chadian nationals can still apply for a visa at the US embassy in a third country.

The reaction of the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

In a statement issued on March 27, the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its regret at the decision. Ibrahim Adam Mahamat, spokesman for the Ministry, said that Chad was seeking to clarify the reasons for the suspension with the US authorities, and hoped for a swift lifting of the measure.

A decision against a backdrop of revised entry rules for the United States

The suspension comes as part of a review of US entry rules since Donald Trump ‘s return to the White House. According to information leaked a few days ago, 43 countries, including 22 in Africa, are now on a list subject to new restrictions. Chad is on the yellow list, the least restrictive of the three categories.

Time allowed to rectify safety deficiencies

The countries on this list have 60 days to resolve what Washington considers to be security shortcomings. However, this information has not yet been officially confirmed by the US government.
