Cameroon has taken a significant step towards modernizing its identification system. Biometric national identity cards can now be produced and issued in just 48 hours. This is a relief for millions of Cameroonians, who for years have had to contend with interminable issuing times – up to ten years under the old system.

A faster, more modern process

With this new system, waiting times are considerably reduced. According to the National Police, 12% of Cameroonians were previously deprived of this essential identity document. Today, the first beneficiaries have begun to receive their biometric cards within the promised timeframe. However, the process involves strict steps, including online pre-registration, and the cost of the card has been revised upwards.

A testimonial to the new procedure

Cabrel Mbouta, one of the first beneficiaries in Yaoundé, shared his experience: “We didn’t believe that in 48 hours we could be issued with a national identity card. We really thank the Cameroonian government.” He nevertheless highlights the difficulties encountered during pre-registration: “It was my uncle who helped me to do the pre-registration online, which wasn’t easy. But once this stage was completed, after paying the required 10,000 FCFA, I received a PDF confirmation and was able to collect my card from the police station within 48 hours.”

An exclusively online procedure

The new system requires an online appointment for pre-registration, a measure designed to streamline the process and avoid long queues. This change requires a gradual adaptation to digital tools.
