Botswana: BHP invests $25 million in Cobre’s Kitlanya copper projects
BHP confirms its commitment to Botswana’s copper industry
Botswana, in the midst of economic diversification, is now banking on the development of its rapidly expanding copper industry. This development is marked by a $25 million strategic investment from BHP, one of the world’s largest mining groups. This financing concerns the Kitlanya East and West projects led by Cobre, within the framework of a partnership signed between the two companies. This investment follows the signing of a letter of intent in September 2024, laying the foundations for a future joint venture agreement.
Details of the agreement and growth prospects
The agreement between BHP and Cobre stipulates that the investment will cover exploration expenditure on both projects, with BHP aiming to acquire 75% of the assets. As part of this transaction, BHP will pay USD 5 million within two years of the agreement coming into force, in addition to a budget of USD 7 million for exploration expenditure from April 2025. Another aspect of the agreement is the payment of a management fee of 250,000 USD per year to Cobre, which will continue to be the main operator during the acquisition phase.
Copper’s growing role in Botswana’s economy
This transaction highlights the growing interest of investors in Botswana’s emerging copper sector. In addition to BHP, other major players such as China’s MMG Group, which already operates the Khoemacau copper mine, have also announced massive investments. MMG, for example, plans to spend USD 700 million to double Khoemacau’s production capacity from 60,000 to 130,000 tonnes of copper per year.
A strategic sector for Botswana’s economic diversification
BHP’s investment and the expansion of its copper projects are part of the Botswana government’s wider strategy to diversify the country’s economy. At present, the diamond sector remains dominant, accounting for 25% of GDP and 80% of exports. However, combined annual copper production, with mines such as Khoemacau and Motheo, now exceeds 100,000 tonnes, and projects currently under development should see this production increase, meeting the growing demand for copper, essential for the energy transition.
Conclusion: Copper, the key to Botswana’s economic diversification
BHP ‘s investment in the Kitlanya projects marks an important step in Botswana‘s economic diversification as it seeks to reduce its dependence on diamonds. With the support of mining giants and a favorable environment for the development of copper production, the country is well positioned to become a major player in the copper industry. The development of this sector could also meet the world’s growing need for copper, particularly as part of the energy transition, and pave the way for a more diversified and resilient Botswana economy.
