Sudan: a deadly attack on a humanitarian convoy in Darfur
An aid mission targeted by violence
On June 2, 2025, a UN humanitarian convoy was violently attacked nearEl Fasher, in North Darfur, killing at least five people, wounding several others and destroying part of its precious cargo. The convoy, comprising some fifteen trucks from the World Food Programme (WFP) andUNICEF, was carrying vital aid from Port Sudan to the town, which is under siege from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF ).
An attack condemned, responsibilities unclear
The exact circumstances of the attack remain unclear. While the Sudanese army accuses the RSF of bombing the convoy with drones, the paramilitaries claim that it was the army that targeted the trucks. Eva Hinds, spokesperson for Unicef, strongly condemned the attack: ” The trucks were clearly marked. Any attack on a humanitarian convoy is unacceptable. ” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an urgent investigation to identify those responsible for this unspeakable attack.
A worsening humanitarian crisis in El Fasher
The town ofEl Fasher, the army’s last stronghold in Darfur, has been under siege for two years. Living conditions are catastrophic. Trapped by the fighting, the inhabitants suffer from an acute lack of food, healthcare and security. The situation has worsened with the recent arrival of thousands of displaced persons, fleeing the deadly attack on the Zam Zam camp. The attack on the convoy has once again deprived these populations of vital aid.
Conclusion: humanitarian aid targeted in a hopeless conflict
The attack on the humanitarian convoy in Darfur marks another tragic turning point in the war that has been ravaging Sudan since 2023. It highlights the total lack of respect for humanitarian law in this conflict, where civilians are paying an inordinate price. Until those responsible are identified, and the safety of humanitarian workers guaranteed, access to aid for the most vulnerable will remain seriously compromised.
