This development is marked by a <strong>$25 million<\/strong> strategic investment from <strong>BHP<\/strong>, one of the world&#8217;s largest mining groups. This financing concerns the <strong>Kitlanya East and West<\/strong> projects led by <strong>Cobre<\/strong>, within the framework of a partnership signed between the two companies. This investment follows the signing of a <strong>letter of intent<\/strong> in September 2024, laying the foundations for a future joint venture agreement.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Details of the agreement and growth prospects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement between BHP and Cobre stipulates that the investment will cover <strong>exploration expenditure<\/strong> on both projects, with BHP aiming to acquire <strong>75%<\/strong> of the assets. As part of this transaction, <strong>BHP<\/strong> will pay <strong>USD 5 million<\/strong> within two years of the agreement coming into force, in addition to a budget of <strong>USD 7 million<\/strong> for exploration expenditure from April 2025. Another aspect of the agreement is the payment of a <strong>management fee<\/strong> of 250,000 USD per year to <strong>Cobre<\/strong>, which will continue to be the main operator during the acquisition phase.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Copper&#8217;s growing role in Botswana&#8217;s economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This transaction highlights the growing interest of investors in Botswana&#8217;s emerging <strong>copper<\/strong> sector. In addition to BHP, other major players such as China&#8217;s <strong>MMG<\/strong> Group, which already operates the <strong>Khoemacau<\/strong> copper mine, have also announced massive investments. MMG, for example, plans to spend <strong>USD 700 million<\/strong> to double Khoemacau&#8217;s production capacity from <strong>60,000 to 130,000 tonnes<\/strong> of copper per year.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A strategic sector for Botswana&#8217;s economic diversification<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BHP&#8217;s investment and the expansion of its copper projects are part of the Botswana government&#8217;s wider strategy to <strong>diversify<\/strong> the country&#8217;s economy. At present, the <strong>diamond sector<\/strong> remains dominant, accounting for <strong>25% of GDP<\/strong> and <strong>80% of exports<\/strong>. However, combined annual copper production, with mines such as <strong>Khoemacau<\/strong> and <strong>Motheo<\/strong>, now exceeds <strong>100,000 tonnes<\/strong>, and projects currently under development should see this production increase, meeting the growing demand for copper, essential for the <strong>energy transition<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Copper, the key to Botswana&#8217;s economic diversification<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BHP<\/strong> &#8216;s investment in the <strong>Kitlanya<\/strong> projects marks an important step in <strong>Botswana<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>economic diversification<\/strong> as it seeks to reduce its dependence on diamonds.
