This alarm follows three recent suicides among young people, a phenomenon that highlights the shortcomings of the mental health system. Professionals in the sector, who have been sounding the alarm for several years, insist on the need for urgent reforms, both in terms of resources and the organization of care.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sector in crisis<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With fewer than <strong>40 psychiatrists<\/strong> for a population of 18 million, <strong>Senegal<\/strong> suffers from a <strong>lack of adequate infrastructure<\/strong>, especially outside <strong>Dakar<\/strong>. <strong>Ansoumana Dione<\/strong>, president of the<strong>Association s\u00e9n\u00e9galaise pour le suivi et l&#8217;assistance aux malades mentaux<\/strong>, deplores the situation: &#8220;In the regions, people have difficulty accessing psychiatrists and the necessary medication. We need to open psychiatric departments in every hospital in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A worrying state of affairs<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The situation is further complicated by the <strong>obsolescence of psychiatric departments<\/strong> in public hospitals. <strong>Professor A\u00efda Sylla<\/strong>, head of the psychiatric department at <strong>Fann<\/strong> Hospital, points out: &#8220;The facilities are obsolete, and safety conditions are inadequate. We have to improvise to stabilize patients before sending them home, but hospitalization conditions are far from ideal.&#8221; This situation is difficult for many Senegalese to accept. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reforms in the pipeline<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with this situation, the government is committed to taking action. On <strong>April 10, 2025<\/strong>, <strong>Ousmane Sonko<\/strong> called for <strong>reform proposals<\/strong> to be submitted by the end of August.
