Key sectors such as textiles, automobiles and oil could be hard hit, jeopardizing the balance of African exports to the US market. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taxes of up to 50% on certain African products<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new tariff policy announced by President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> provides for significant increases in import taxes. Some countries will be particularly hard hit, with tariffs reaching <strong>50% for Lesotho, 47% for Madagascar and 40% for Mauritius<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A blow for African exports<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, trade between <strong>sub-Saharan Africa and the United States<\/strong> amounted to <strong>$47.5 billion<\/strong>, including <strong>$29.3 billion in African exports<\/strong>. The main products affected are <strong>crude oil, precious metals, motor vehicles and textiles<\/strong>. With these new taxes, African companies will lose competitiveness, putting thousands of jobs at risk.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The uncertain future of AGOA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These tariff measures raise concerns about the future of the<strong>African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA<\/strong>), which allowed several African countries to export to the United States on preferential terms. If these taxes are applied, many African economic players will have to <strong>rethink their export strategies<\/strong> to diversify their outlets. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: increased pressure on African economies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with this threat, Africa must adapt its trade policy by exploring new markets and strengthening intra-African partnerships.
