Only structures that have obtained a <strong>presidential decree<\/strong> are legally recognized. This measure is part of the <strong>fight against abuses<\/strong> reported within these religious communities, notably cases of <strong>extortion of the faithful<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>Yaound\u00e9<\/strong>, the capital, the <strong>Yaound\u00e9 4<\/strong> district was particularly hard hit by this wave of closures. <strong>188 places of worship<\/strong> have been <strong>sealed off<\/strong>, provoking <strong>indignation among the faithful<\/strong>. <strong>Rosine Ndzana<\/strong>, one of the faithful, expresses her dismay:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;These churches bring us comfort. A lot of Cameroonians rely on them to stand firm in the face of difficulties. Without them, my family and I would be lost.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Churches accused of nuisance and administrative fraud<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Ministry of Territorial Administration<\/strong>, in collaboration with the <strong>intelligence services and local authorities<\/strong>, carried out <strong>in-depth investigations<\/strong> before taking action.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main <strong>reasons for closure<\/strong> include :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excessive <strong>noise pollution<\/strong>, leading to <strong>repeated complaints from local residents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fraudulent use of presidential decrees<\/strong> for authorized churches, in return for <strong>monthly payments of between 50,000 and 100,000 CFA francs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Illegal outsourcing of religious status<\/strong>, with pastors selling their <strong>official documents to other preachers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;We found that some pastors were using another church&#8217;s presidential decree in return for payment &#8211; a real administrative mess,&#8221;<\/em> says <strong>Elvis Akondi Mbahangwen<\/strong>, sub-prefect of Yaound\u00e9 4.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A stricter framework for religious worship in Cameroon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phenomenon of <strong>revivalist churches<\/strong> has grown strongly in recent years, with a <strong>proliferation of chapels and parishes<\/strong>. In <strong>Yaound\u00e9 4 alone, 615 churches<\/strong> have been counted. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with these <strong>administrative abuses and sectarian aberrations<\/strong>, the government intends to <strong>strengthen regulation<\/strong> of the religious sector.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>massive closure of illegal churches<\/strong> in Cameroon illustrates the authorities&#8217; determination to <strong>regulate a rapidly expanding religious landscape<\/strong>. While this measure aims to <strong>protect the faithful from dubious practices<\/strong>, it has also provoked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as an <strong>attack on freedom of worship<\/strong>.
