This progress is part of a global dynamic of digital transformation, although regional disparities remain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>12%<\/strong>\u00a0deficit in West Africa,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>9%<\/strong>\u00a0in East Africa,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>34%<\/strong>\u00a0in Central Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)<\/strong>&nbsp;illustrates these disparities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>46% of the population<\/strong>\u00a0does not have access to mobile broadband coverage,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25%<\/strong>\u00a0have no mobile coverage, even\u00a0<strong>2G<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Colossal investments needed for universal connectivity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universal connectivity&nbsp;<strong>by 2030<\/strong>&nbsp;requires an estimated investment of&nbsp;<strong>USD 430 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, several challenges are holding back these investments, particularly in the least developed countries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expansion costs are rising rapidly: for example, in the DRC, going from 75% to 95% coverage would require\u00a0<strong>5,700 new mobile sites<\/strong>\u00a0, with a cost per person ranging from\u00a0<strong>$7 to over $600<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic viability is compromised by modest mobile incomes (average growth of 2% over three years) and high inflation (8.5% in 2022 and 6.2% in 2023).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alternatives to bridge the digital divide<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To overcome these challenges, several innovative solutions are emerging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Community networks<\/strong>\u00a0: These local initiatives provide targeted, low-cost coverage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Satellite Internet<\/strong>\u00a0: Since\u00a0<strong>2022<\/strong>\u00a0, the expansion of\u00a0<strong>Starlink<\/strong>\u00a0(American provider) offers coverage in isolated areas. However, this option faces obstacles:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restrictive legislation in some countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High prices, often inaccessible to disadvantaged populations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Vital Impact of Mobile Internet in Africa<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access to the Internet has become essential to support the continent\u2019s digital transformation and economic development. As the GSMA highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mobile Internet is connecting more people than ever before to essential services such as healthcare, education, e-commerce and financial services, while creating revenue-generating opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: A collective effort for a connected Africa<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although significant progress has been made, the road to universal connectivity remains fraught with challenges. The mobilization of governments, telecom operators and international partners is crucial to bridge the digital divide, by exploring innovative business models and accessible technologies.
