Senegalese Oumar Kane, better known as Reug Reug, is now the ONE Championship heavyweight champion. This historic title, acquired on November 8, makes him a rising figure in African MMA. In the wake of his title, he expressed an ambitious desire: to face Francis Ngannou, former UFC champion, for a duel at the top. But this ambition also raises questions about the strategy that Reug Reug could adopt to pursue a long-term career in MMA, while remaining faithful to his roots as a Senegalese wrestler.

Fresh off his win over Anatoly Malykhin, Reug Reug dreams of a clash with Ngannou, a clash that would mark the history of African MMA. But this challenge is immense. Ngannou is a seasoned fighter, and according to Reug Reug’s coach, Habib Diabong, such a confrontation would be premature. “Francis Ngannou, he’s on another level,” he warns. Diabong advises Reug Reug to focus on his technical development, particularly in English boxing and submission, before targeting an opponent of Ngannou’s stature.

Before he aspires to challenge Ngannou, Reug Reug could consider a rematch against Anatoly Malykhin, but this time in a lower weight category. Ready to lose up to 20 kg to get down to 100 kg, Reug Reug could strengthen his reputation and accumulate experience. A victory in this category would allow him to consolidate his record without taking excessive risks and to show that he can shine in lower weight categories.

Although he now excels in MMA, Reug Reug is not abandoning Senegalese wrestling, his original discipline. A fight awaits him on January 1st against Boy Niang 2, a match highly anticipated by wrestling fans in Senegal. However, if Senegalese wrestling embodies a cultural pride for him, it cannot compete with the prestige and income of MMA. The difficulty for Reug Reug will lie in managing these two disciplines, which could come into conflict over the course of his career.

At this point, Reug Reug is at a turning point in his career. Between the possibility of establishing himself in international MMA and his attachment to Senegalese wrestling, each decision he makes will have major consequences for his future. By structuring his career and developing his technical skills, he could write his name in the history of African sport and MMA.
