In Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo, several former militiamen are trying to reintegrate into civilian life after giving up their weapons. This region, scarred by years of conflict, is now seeing a fragile hope: hundreds of former combatants aspire to reconciliation and invest in community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
L\u00e9onie Safari, 20, is one of the figures of this reintegration. A former member of CODECO, an armed group active in the conflict in Ituri, she joined the rebellion in 2020 after the loss of her parents. Today, she explains that she left this life to work for peace: \u201cIt was the difficult life that pushed me to join the bush. But I decided to leave this path to promote peace in our country<\/em> ,\u201d she confides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the village of Dionga, former members of armed groups, including Sumaili Irachani, a former militiaman of the FPIC (Patriotic and Integrationist Front of Congo), contribute to development projects, such as road rehabilitation. Sumaili describes the difficult journey of this transition: “I laid down my arms and I work on the road to earn a small amount that helps me, because life is increasingly difficult.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Although six armed groups have laid down their arms and committed to peace, many express a sense of abandonment by the government. Pacard Luhavo, representative of the PDDRC-S reintegration program, underlines the importance of these initiatives: “These young Congolese have renounced violence to embrace peace and the reconstruction of the country.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the state of siege declared by President F\u00e9lix Tshisekedi three years ago, peace remains fragile in Ituri. Civil society fears a resurgence of violence, particularly if reintegration programs do not receive the necessary support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reintegration of former militias in the DRC is an immense task, requiring constant support from the government and programs for vocational training, socio-economic reintegration and education.
