On October 4, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon. Zachée S., a 24-year-old student, was stabbed by Donald H., an employee of the city’s Autonomous Port, after an argument over a bet on the status of Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fécafoot). The altercation broke out following a debate on Eto’o’s suspension by FIFA, a topic that ignited a discussion in a bar in the Makèpè neighborhood.

The two men were at odds over FIFA’s decision regarding Samuel Eto’o’s suspension. Donald H. claimed that the sanction had been lifted, while Zachée S. claimed otherwise. To decide, they each bet 50,000 CFA francs. After checking the facts with a football expert, it was confirmed that Eto’o’s suspension had not been lifted, giving the victory to Zachée. The latter, in the euphoria of his victory, bought a round of drinks, which seems to have fueled Donald’s frustration, who had just lost a large sum of money.

As Zacchaeus was walking home, he was attacked by Donald, armed with a knife. Donald demanded that he give him the money he had won, but Zacchaeus refused. A violent attack ensued, during which the student was stabbed twice, in the shoulder and in the back, before the attacker fled with the bag containing the money. Zacchaeus’ screams alerted passers-by who rescued him. He was taken to a clinic, where his life is not in danger. As for Donald, he is currently on the run, wanted by the police.

The violent altercation stems from the recent suspension of Samuel Eto’o by FIFA, following inappropriate behavior during a match of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. FIFA banned Eto’o from attending Cameroon national team matches for six months, a decision that has sparked much discussion and controversy in the country.

This sad incident illustrates how a simple sports discussion can degenerate into extreme violence. While football is a passion in Cameroon, this event also shows the social and economic tensions that can inflame seemingly innocuous debates. The search for Donald H. continues, while Zachée S. recovers from his injuries.
