The scheme, dubbed&nbsp;<strong>Kilimo Konnect<\/strong>&nbsp;, aims to facilitate access to loans for Kenyan farmers to finance their operations, acquire equipment and manage post-harvest operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A fund dedicated to agricultural modernization and technology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kilimo Konnect initiative is not just about providing credit. According to&nbsp;<strong>George Odhiambo<\/strong>&nbsp;, Managing Director of NBK, the programme also includes training&nbsp;<strong>to<\/strong>&nbsp;encourage the adoption of&nbsp;<strong>new agricultural technologies<\/strong>&nbsp;. These trainings will be conducted in partnership with&nbsp;<strong>Private Equity Support (PES)<\/strong>&nbsp;, the&nbsp;<strong>Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Grobox Limited<\/strong>&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is to strengthen the sustainability of agriculture in Kenya by equipping farmers with the tools to face modern challenges and position themselves in a competitive market. Furthermore, this programme is part of NBK\u2019s commitment to&nbsp;<strong>green financing<\/strong>&nbsp;, aimed at ensuring a sustainable future for the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Low access to credit for Kenyan farmers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the importance of agriculture to the Kenyan economy, contributing&nbsp;<strong>21.3% of GDP<\/strong>&nbsp;and employing about&nbsp;<strong>33% of the workforce<\/strong>&nbsp;, the sector continues to receive&nbsp;<strong>little financial support<\/strong>&nbsp;. In 2022, only&nbsp;<strong>3.4% of<\/strong>&nbsp;commercial bank loans to the private sector went to agriculture, according to data from the&nbsp;<strong>Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)<\/strong>&nbsp;. This imbalance is mainly attributed to&nbsp;<strong>climate risks<\/strong>&nbsp;, including drought, which affect farmers\u2019 ability to repay their loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The launch of the&nbsp;<strong>Kilimo Konnect<\/strong>&nbsp;Fund marks a turning point in agricultural financing in Kenya.
