Guinea’s presidency formally denied on Thursday allegations that “shots” had been fired near the presidential palace in Conakry. Special forces were reported on the scene, according to some local media.

In a statement, the presidency described the rumors as “crazy” and “fabricated,” adding that they had been circulating both in the city and abroad. It also assured that the population could resume their daily activities as normal, despite the climate of panic caused by the information.

In 2021, similar incidents in Kaloum preceded the coup that ousted President Alpha Condé, leading to the rise to power of a military regime led by General Mamadi Doumbouya. Since then, the authorities have stepped up their crackdown on dissent, banning all protests in 2022.

Under pressure from ECOWAS, Guinea had promised to hold elections by the end of 2024. However, the authorities acknowledge difficulties in fulfilling this commitment. In addition, a preliminary draft of the Constitution was presented in July, with the intention of submitting it to a referendum before the end of the year, although no date has been set and the text is rejected by the main opposition parties and civil society organizations.
