Togo: IDB Funds $60.3 Million to Support Vulnerable Populations

New IDB Support to Improve Living Conditions in Togo

The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) recently approved a financing of 60.3 million dollars (more than 36 billion FCFA) for Togo. This initiative, adopted at the 357th meeting of the IsDB Board of Directors in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, aims to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable populations by promoting income-generating activities and stimulating agricultural productivity.

Targeted Investments for Sustainable Economic Development

This IDB financing is intended to support sustainable economic initiatives in Togo, focusing on key sectors such as agriculture, which is essential for food security and rural employment. The financed projects also encourage income-generating activities, which will play a crucial role in reducing poverty and improving livelihoods.

A Continued Partnership with the IDB for Various Development Projects

The Islamic Development Bank is already engaged in several initiatives in Togo, such as coastal protection and rural electrification. In 2023, the IsDB also signed an agreement with the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), a subsidiary of the IsDB, to mobilize $250 million in support of three strategic sectors: energy, agriculture, and the private sector.

A Large-Scale Support Program for Development in Africa

International Support in Several African Countries

The approval of this financing for Togo is part of a global IDB program aimed at stimulating socio-economic development in its member countries. Under this program, more than $3 billion has been allocated to support 20 projects in 17 countries, including 9 in Africa. Beneficiaries include Mozambique ($19.8 million for the health system), Morocco (nearly $480 million for a hydroelectric plant), Côte d’Ivoire ($281 million for an agricultural production highway) and Cameroon ($176.3 million for transport).

Conclusion: Growing Involvement of the IDB for Inclusive Development in Africa

The $60.3 million IDB financing for Togo demonstrates the institution’s commitment to supporting inclusive and sustainable economic development in Africa. By strengthening key sectors and encouraging poverty reduction projects, the IDB actively participates in the transformation of African economies, thereby enabling the most vulnerable populations to benefit from better living conditions.
