Senegal: Germany provides €147 million in support for sustainable development and energy infrastructure

A renewed partnership for sustainable development

Senegal and Germany strengthened their cooperation during the intergovernmental negotiations held on 5 and 6 November 2024 in Dakar. On this occasion, a financial commitment of 147.47 million euros ($155.4 million) was announced to support various strategic sectors of sustainable development in Senegal.

Funding details and key objectives

The funding, detailed in a note published on November 13 by the Senegalese Ministry of Economy, includes $58 million in budget support for structural reforms. Priorities for this investment include:

• Strengthening the rule of law and transparency,
• Digital transformation,
• The development of energy network infrastructure,
• Promoting sustainable investments to boost the economy.

This initiative also places particular emphasis on improving economic prospects for young people and women , key groups in inclusive growth.

A context marked by ambitions for inclusive growth

According to the World Bank, Senegal faces challenges related to:

• Management of macro-budgetary, climatic and social risks,
• Improving human capital,
• Increasing competitiveness and job creation.

These priorities are aligned with previous commitments, notably the partnership concluded in 2019 within the framework of the G20 Compact with Africa initiative , which aimed to promote socially ecological development and to promote employment for young Senegalese people .
