Senegal: An Investment of 2 Million Dollars for Food Sovereignty
Strengthening Resilience to Climate Risks
As the effects of climate change continue to undermine food sovereignty in several regions of the world, Senegal is stepping up its efforts to support its agricultural producers. Funding of 1.042 billion FCFA (approximately $2 million) has been committed to projects aimed at promoting food self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imports.
Signing of Agreements to Support Producers
On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, a ceremony formalized the signing of agreements between the Agricultural Development and Rural Entrepreneurship Support Program (PADAER) and eight producer organizations in the Kédougou region. These agreements are part of the PADAER Pilot Project 2 , said Sada Ly , national coordinator of the program.
Targeted Strategic Sectors
The funding targets several crucial sectors, including:
- Market gardening
- Breeding
- The transformation of local products
These activities are essential to strengthen food security and ensure greater nutritional autonomy.
The Challenges of Food Security in Senegal
Despite a food self-sufficiency rate of 84% , Senegal remains dependent on imports for products such as white rice, corn and wheat. In addition, unfavorable climatic conditions aggravate the situation, increasing the vulnerability of populations.
According to the African Development Bank (AfDB) , food insecurity in Senegal has fluctuated significantly in recent years, with prevalence reaching 23.1% in 2020 , before returning to 17.4% in 2021 .
Direct Impact of Financing
Some 3,659 beneficiaries have been identified to benefit from these funds, intended to promote food self-sufficiency and strengthen the capacities of local producers in targeted areas.
