A new era thanks to offshore oil

Recent discoveries of world-class oil fields in the offshore Orange Basin are opening up new economic opportunities for Namibia. With reserves estimated at 8 billion barrels , the country hopes to position itself as a key player in the global oil market.

Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo underlines the strategic importance of these discoveries:

“If these oil discoveries are exploited to their full potential, Namibia could double its annual GDP growth. That’s huge . “

The objective is clear: to achieve an economic growth rate of 8% within 10 years , compared to an economy currently dominated by the exploitation of diamond mines.

Currently, diamonds account for about 6% of GDP and 20% of export earnings . By diversifying its revenue streams away from oil, Namibia could reduce its reliance on the industry and build a more resilient economy.
