Ivory Coast: A booming market for meat and meat products

Ivory Coast: A booming market for meat and meat products

Growth estimated at $2.2 billion by 2027

The Ivorian market for meat and edible offal is expanding rapidly and is expected to generate major economic opportunities in the next three years. According to projections by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) , the market value is expected to increase from $1.5 billion in 2022 to $2.2 billion in 2027 .

This growth is fueled by increasing urbanization and rising incomes among the Ivorian population, which are promoting dietary diversification and increased consumption of meat products.

A sharp increase in demand

Consumer trends

Per capita meat consumption is expected to increase from 31 kg in 2022 to 35 kg by 2027 , driven by an increased preference for animal proteins such as beef, poultry and pork. Urban households are also incorporating more processed and mixed foods, illustrating a notable shift in eating habits.

The role of poultry

The poultry segment is expected to be particularly dynamic, with an estimated value of $700 million by 2027 , or nearly a third of the total meat products market. This sector benefits from government measures such as the compensatory levy of 1,000 FCFA per kilogram of imported poultry, limiting the effects of foreign subsidies and promoting local production.

In addition, the national strategic plan aims to increase poultry production to 200,000 tonnes and per capita consumption to 6.2 kg by 2030, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of local players.

Beef and pork: booming sectors

Beef, a prized meat

Ivorians are showing growing interest in quality beef, although domestic production covers only a third of needs. In 2023, beef imports reached $64.5 million , representing 40% of total meat purchases. This segment remains a strategic priority to meet growing demand.

Pork: an emerging market

In urban areas, pork is gaining popularity due to its flavor and affordability. Local dishes such as pork kedjenou or braised pork contribute to this trend. Despite an estimated annual consumption of between 60,000 and 100,000 tons , the market remains largely dependent on imports, which cover up to 80% of the supply.

Conclusion: A sector with strong economic potential

Côte d’Ivoire is well positioned to take advantage of the rapidly expanding meat and meat products market, estimated to reach $2.2 billion by 2027. Growth is supported by increased demand, government measures to strengthen local production, and accelerated urbanization.

With opportunities across the entire value chain, the meat products sector represents a key driver for the Ivorian economy, while meeting the diversified food needs of its population.
