Nigeria: Renewal of the military fleet with M-346 aircraft and AW-109 Trekker helicopters

A strategic reinforcement for the Nigerian army

As part of a strategy to modernize its air fleet, the Nigerian Air Force announced on October 14, 2024 the acquisition of 24 M-346 fighter jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters from the Italian aircraft manufacturer Leonardo. This initiative aims to strengthen the country’s military capabilities in its fight against the jihadist insurgency in the northeast, led in particular by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), as well as against the violence of criminal gangs operating in the northwest.

Staggered delivery until 2026

According to Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Olusola Akinboyewa, the first three M-346 aircraft are expected to be delivered in early 2025, with successive deliveries continuing through mid-2026. For the AW-109 Trekker helicopters, the first deliveries are scheduled for early 2026. This fleet renewal is also accompanied by a proposal to set up a maintenance center in Nigeria, ensuring long-term support for the M-346 fleet.

A response to growing security threats

In the face of increasing attacks by terrorist groups in the northeast and criminal gangs in the northwest, Nigeria has significantly increased its military spending. These new acquisitions are part of measures aimed at strengthening the Nigerian army’s response capabilities, particularly in areas most affected by conflict and violence.

Conclusion: Modernization is essential for national security

The acquisition of the M-346 aircraft and AW-109 Trekker helicopters represents a major step in strengthening Nigeria’s air defense. In addition to enhancing national security, this fleet renewal will enable Nigeria to better respond to the challenges posed by terrorist groups and criminal gangs that continue to destabilize several regions of the country.
