John Mahama wins Ghana presidential election: A historic comeback

Ghana, known for its tradition of peaceful and democratic political change, has elected opposition candidate John Mahama as its new president. The victory comes amid rapid recognition of the results, marking a gesture of respect for the popular will.

Incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia , the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) , publicly acknowledged his defeat at a press conference in Accra. He also extended his congratulations to John Mahama , saying: “The people of Ghana have spoken, they have voted for change, and we respect that with all humility.”

An unprecedented return to the head of state

With this victory, John Mahama enters history as the first president of the Fourth Republic of Ghana to return to office after an electoral defeat. After leading the country from 2013 to 2017 , he will succeed Nana Akufo-Addo , who is completing his second term.

Although the electoral authorities have yet to announce the official results, Mr Mahama confirmed on his X account that he had received a congratulatory call from his opponent. Meanwhile, supporters of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party are already celebrating the victory on the streets of Accra.
