DRC: Patrice Lumumba’s mausoleum vandalized, investigation underway
An act of desecration denounced
The mausoleum of Patrice Lumumba , hero of Congolese independence, was vandalized on Monday, November 18, 2024 in Kinshasa , the Ministry of Culture announced. In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry strongly condemned this “odious act” , perceived as an attempt to desacralize the tomb of this historical figure.
When questioned, Culture Minister Yolande Elebe said she could not confirm whether the precious tooth, a relic of Lumumba kept in the mausoleum, had been stolen. An investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage and the motivations of the perpetrators.
The relic: symbol of national memory
Patrice Lumumba’s tooth, considered an object of great historical and symbolic value, was returned by Belgium in 2022 during a solemn ceremony in the presence of President Félix Tshisekedi . On this occasion, a three-day national mourning was declared in the DRC.
Since its return, this relic has rested under high guard in the concrete mausoleum located at the foot of the Tour de l’Échangeur, an emblematic monument of Kinshasa.
A martyr of Congolese independence
Assassinated in January 1961 , Patrice Lumumba remains a central figure in the Congolese struggle for independence. He made history by delivering a memorable speech against colonial racism at the country’s independence proclamation on 30 June 1960. However, he was overthrown just three months after forming the first government of independent Congo.
His execution, orchestrated by Katanga separatists with the support of Belgian mercenaries, was followed by a macabre act: his body was dissolved in acid, making identification impossible. For decades, his remains were kept in Belgium until a Belgian police officer involved in his disappearance revealed their existence.
A wound still open
In 2022, the restitution of this tooth to Patrice Lumumba’s family by the Belgian government was accompanied by an official apology for Belgium’s “moral responsibility” in his assassination. This restitution symbolized an attempt at reconciliation with a painful past for the DRC.
