Chad: New aid of 55 million euros from Germany to face the crises

Financial support for multiple challenges

Germany has announced an additional €55 million (USD 58.2 million) in aid to Chad, aimed at supporting its efforts to overcome persistent insecurity, an acute humanitarian crisis and growing food insecurity. The announcement was made by Svenja Schulze, German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, during her visit to Chad where she met with Abderaman Koulamallah, Chadian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Targeted areas of intervention

Discussions focused on key areas such as:

• Economic development : to strengthen the country’s economic foundations.
• Education and health : to improve access and quality of services for the population.
• Environmental protection : in response to climate issues.
• Refugee management : a crucial issue for a country hosting a large number of displaced people.

Since the start of the war in neighbouring Sudan in April 2023, Chad has hosted 636,223 Sudanese refugees, including 149,472 this year, according to UNHCR data.

Chadian efforts welcomed by Germany

Svenja Schulze acknowledged Chad’s significant efforts, particularly in the fight against terrorism, the reception of refugees, and the improvement of living conditions for local populations. She also stressed the importance of the reforms undertaken by the government, including the organization of the presidential election, which demonstrates the country’s desire to progress despite the many challenges.

Renewed international support

This aid comes on top of previous funding of €50 million, allocated in October 2024 by Katja Keul, German Deputy Foreign Minister, to support stability and the humanitarian response in the west of the country.
