Death of Valentin-Yves Mudimbe, eminent Congolese philosopher, aged 83
A major voice in African studies passes away
Valentin-Yves Mudimbe, a key figure in African thought, died on April 22, 2025, at the age of 83 in North Carolina, USA, where he resided. Author of The Invention of Africa , a fundamental work in postcolonial studies, Mudimbe leaves behind a rich and influential body of work.
A unique journey
Born on December 8, 1941, in Likasi, Haut-Katanga, Mudimbe received religious training from the Benedictines, eventually completing his novitiate. But at the age of 21, he chose to leave monastic life to pursue philosophy studies at the University of Louvain, Belgium.
Back in Africa, he taught at the University of Lubumbashi and became involved in several intellectual journals. Fleeing the political climate of Zaire under Mobutu, he went into exile in 1979, continuing his academic career in Europe and then in the United States, notably at Stanford.
The theorist of the “colonial library”
Through some forty essays, Mudimbe deconstructs the way the West has represented Africa through the stories of explorers, missionaries, and anthropologists.
Using the concept of the “colonial library,” he analyzes how these discourses shaped stereotypical imaginaries of the continent.
His intellectual quest aimed to build an African library : knowledge constructed by and for Africans.
