Kenya-China: a $13.9 million agreement to modernize the health sector

A strategic partnership to strengthen healthcare

On March 27, 2025, Kenya and China signed a grant agreement worth 1.8 billion Kenyan shillings ($13.9 million). The aim is to modernize several hospital facilities across the country. The announcement was made by the Kenyan National Treasury, which stressed the importance of this support in improving access to healthcare.

A healthcare system in constant transformation

Despite the efforts made, Kenya still faces many challenges in its healthcare system: unequal access to care, shortage of medical equipment, lack of qualified personnel, among others. To remedy this, the government has launched several major reforms, including the creation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) in October 2024, charged with centralizing contributions and guaranteeing equitable distribution of services.

In its 2024-2025 budget, Nairobi has allocated 204.5 billion shillings to the health sector, up sharply from 127 billion the previous year.

Growing bilateral ties

At the signing ceremony, Kenya’s Minister of Finance, John Mbadi, hailed the partnership as a symbol of the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries. China is a major strategic partner for Kenya, not only in healthcare, but also in infrastructure and economic development.

Multi-sector cooperation with Beijing

In addition to the health sector, Sino-Kenyan cooperation extends to several key areas. Beijing has financed major projects such as the standard gauge railroad (SGR ) and the Nairobi highway. In September 2024, President William Ruto, on an official visit to China, secured a $280 million loan to finalize 15 frozen infrastructure projects in a dozen counties.
