A new cooperation program between Senegal and Belgium

A renewed agreement for 2024-2029

Senegal and Belgium have signed a new cooperation program worth €40 million (around $41 million) for the period 2024-2029. This agreement follows on from the previous program (2019-2023), which amounted to $46 million.

Objectives and strategic directions

This program aims to improve the socio-economic prospects of young women and men through two major projects:

  1. Strengthening sustainable food sovereignty: This project targets socio-economic resilience and the fight against climate change in the Sine Saloum region.
  2. Optimizing the healthcare system: The focus is on developing healthcare infrastructures in several regions of the country.

Alignment with national priorities

This program is part of Senegal’s National Development Strategy (SND) 2025-2029, which aims to :

  • Build an endogenous economic model based on territorial development clusters.
  • Enhance the quality of human capital and ensure greater social equity.
  • Promote national stability and regional integration.
  • Promote good governance, scientific research and technological innovation.
  • Develop adequate financing for the economy.

It also contributes to the national objective of improving the health insurance system, with the ambition of extending departmental units and enabling 1.5 million Senegalese women to access universal health insurance.

Conclusion

This partnership between Senegal and Belgium illustrates a strong commitment to the country’s socio-economic development. Thanks to targeted investments in agriculture, climate resilience and health, this cooperation plays an active role in implementing the major orientations of the Senegal Plan 2050.
